In one of our materials, this game was included in the TOP games that are talked about too much, but played too little. This is not to say that this survivalist is completely unpopular. Of course not. The simple nuance is that many more people know about it than actually played at least once. Minecraft is Justin Bieber in his field: everyone has heard about him too, but few have listened. All in all, this is a clearly overpriced thing that is, frankly, annoying, and right now, for that matter, to back up the above with real arguments, we present to you 10 reasons to hate Minecraft.
Reason #1. Appearance.
Whatever you say, Minecraft looks extremely poor. So bad that it even became fashionable. A bunch of critics immediately began to say that this has its own unique style. On the catwalks during high fashion days, models walked out in square-shaped clothes, a bunch of cosplayers hid their curves under ridiculous rectangular outfits. In general, somehow it suddenly began to seem like there was nothing wrong. It’s just retro. But this is not retro, ladies and gentlemen. Retro is Battletoads Double Dragon, The Way, or Terraria. And here it’s just a deliberate coarsening of everything possible. There is an opinion, and in the 90s, not everyone would be able to play something like this. What can we say about the current times?? In short, the cubic style of Minecraft, in my opinion, is one of the worst manifestations of the modern gaming industry, like Malevich’s Square in painting, or a sculpture made from garbage at a museum exhibition.
Reason #2. Fights.
Do you know why many people stopped playing Skyrim?? Because there, as in all Elder Scrolls, the battles are quite dull, especially if you play as warriors. If you think this is not true, then play Ubisoft’s vintage action game – Dark Messiah. There is also the first person, and the battles are my respect. So, the years go by, and combat mechanics progress. Kingdome Come and For Honor have already been released, in which these same battles are raised to a fundamentally new level. So, boring battles in Skyrim are nothing compared to battles in Minecraft. The battles here are not just boring, but extremely boring, dull and primitive. I won’t be surprised if someday I find out that a couple of programmers and one designer wrote down this same combat mechanic on Monday, in one day, after a stormy weekend with copious libations. You know, this type of work, let go? So, it seems that battles in Minecraft were done exactly according to this principle.
Reason #3. Vain promises.
Minecraft was actually going to be a fun game at some point. Until the project was bought by Microsoft, it seemed promising. And when Notch chopped off a couple of billion dollars and left, even the most ardent fan became clear that the game was moving from the category of promising to the category of eternally promising, remaining imperfections. Fans were promised a lot of things, from a bunch of new modes to the addition of a full-fledged plot, but no one kept these promises. If anyone has forgotten, I remind you: it was Microsoft that at one time refused to support Minecraft, due to the fact that, they say, no one would play this stupidity. The open game was called garbage, but everything happened exactly according to the classics: the leadership of the small softies underestimated the unpredictability of human stupidity. People loved it, and years later Microsoft spent a lot of money to ride Minecraft to its peak.
Reason #4. Stupidest intelligence.
Minecraft has very boring battles, done on the knees in one day, and, which is typical, never developed into something more interesting. The same can be said about the artificial intelligence of mobs. Their intelligence is an example of the dumbest intelligence in general in the history of the gaming industry. The zombies in the first Blood or the Germans in Wolfenstein 3D were smarter than the local enemies. All these witches, slugs, skeletons, ifrits — they all act on the same principle: reduce the distance to the target as much as possible, and start hitting him slowly. What to say if the intelligence of the same slug does not differ one gram from the intelligence of the ancient guard. You have to really dislike video games, or simply not understand them, to be inspired by Minecraft as a game with interesting battles.
Reason #5. Self-entertainment and repetition.
There’s nothing in Minecraft that can entertain you on its own. I mean, some kind of feature that would catch and tighten. Here you are simply put in a playpen filled with cubes. They plant and leave, and you are there as you wish. And many, I must say, like it. I like that they were left and allowed to have fun on their own. However, if you take a sober look, you can say that everything in the game is extremely monotonous, and most importantly, the gameplay is obscenely repeatable. Every day in this static world looks the same. And all the changes that he is ready to make, you must make yourself, with your own hands. As a result, a really interesting and unusual mechanic remained bare and unfinished. Minecraft can be compared to a scooter among bicycles. But, nevertheless, many believe that pushing off with one foot from the ground in order to travel a few more meters by inertia is much more interesting than pedaling and taking dashing turns at speed.
Reason #6. Pointlessness.
I just told you about repetition and self-entertainment, and now I’ll tell you about the pointlessness of Minecraft. This concept is different from all of the above. In my opinion, every entertainment process should have a meaning, from masturbation to cutting out with a jigsaw. Video games are no exception. In an ideal video game, the hero, be he a person or an entire state, develops, moves along some independently laid out plot, and in the end achieves some result. Minecraft doesn’t have any of this. The game did not and does not have a normal single player campaign. What about the campaign — it doesn’t even have a clear system of incentives and rewards for achievements. There is no normal leaderboard, there is nothing at all that would motivate development. Jumping in a puddle is even more fun — sooner or later the puddle will splash, and you will be left standing on solid ground. But Minecraft, it seems, will not change and will never evolve.
Reason #7. Lack of prospects.
There is an opinion that the work of those hired to improve Minecraft is hard labor. How can this be improved?? The answer to this question will be an endless series of meaningless and monotonous updates that add new creatures, new resources or new pieces of equipment to the game. The maximum effect that such content is capable of is to surprise the regulars: wow — a new type of zombie. But when the zombie is killed, it turns out that he is not new, but exactly the same as he was, just in a new cover. Either they add a horse or a donkey. It seems that the developers have all this content ready now, but they are releasing it in parts — a teaspoon per day, because if you dump all this delight at once, people will get bored faster, like a child will get bored if you give him a box of toys, instead of giving out one new one every day.
Reason #8. Infinite horizontality.
The Minecraft world is as dull as the Rostov steppe in July. Only in the steppe is there night, kites fly, small reptiles run around, mounds stand, and in general life is in full swing. In this game there is only an illusion of life. And okay, let it be an illusion: the problem is that the world here is extremely horizontal. There are few games of this genre in the world where there would be such flat locations. All terrain that may appear here must be created by the players themselves. Yes, you can dig deep here — quite a rare thing in video games. Games where you can dig down, going deeper after, can be listed on one hand. But what’s down there?? Nothing, same as above. And now, when multi-level worlds, with mountains and dungeons, are becoming fashionable, the world of Minecraft looks like an outdated atavism.
Reason #9. Without realism.
The graphics, senselessness and lack of intelligence of the enemies could be forgiven if Minecraft were good with realism. But it’s strange to expect something like this from a game whose main feature is primitiveness in everything. The force of gravity works very controversially here. Why bother? It doesn’t work at all. Mining, which is supposedly the main hook here, is as arcade-like as possible. You will not be covered with earth in a collapsed tunnel, will not be flooded with groundwater, and will not be suffocated by the lack of air. You do not need to put up supports and lay fixing mortar on the blocks. All this looks more like some kind of comic tech demo, like the one that is shown to us by some program that overclocks a video card in order to calculate its capabilities.
Reason #10. Stupid servers.

They themselves may be good, kind and sympathetic, but, unfortunately, they do not read books, are not interested in the world around them, and, most likely, are simply indecently young. Hmm, the point of view is really interesting, but I get the feeling that either the author is talking about something he knows absolutely nothing about, or he is very, very, very, very fat. But I don’t want to reflect on the sincerity of what was written, it’s much more interesting for me to refute the 10 reasons given, because almost all of them are very weak.
1) About the graphics: minecraft graphics hardly tried to resemble
This is based on another concept — voxel graphics, where a voxel is a volumetric pixel. And for reasons of saving game resources, each voxel is covered with 16×16 pixel textures. If you put aside your personal “favorites” and look at the graphics of Minecraft objectively, then suddenly they don’t seem so terrible: does it convey information?? Yes, all blocks, mobs and objects are clearly distinguishable from each other, half a glance is enough to distinguish one from the other. Is it made with high quality for its level?? 2) The argument about battles has some truth, but it doesn’t make sense: Minecraft is not a game about battles, and when created, the emphasis was not on them at all. I can, by your own logic, criticize the example Kingdome Come and For Honor for the fact that construction is completely undeveloped in them. What about “the years go by”? why in Minecraft 10 years ago you can break stone walls with a sword, but in them you can’t? Such criticism, however, would be foolish, since all these games emphasized completely different aspects. And just for reference, the basis of Minecraft, that is, all the main mechanics of the game, were really created by one person, so it’s not very fair to put a line of large projects against Minecraft, which is essentially an indie game (yes, Kingdome Come is also a small game, but there were budgets and a team).
3) It is not entirely clear what kind of prospects the author prophesied for Minecraft, a ready-made indie game by the way, and where they disappeared when Microsoft bought it. After all, the development team has hardly changed, as far as I remember, and it was after the injection of money from the company that updates began to appear in the game, with the goal of developing existing aspects of the game, and not just adding blocks and resources. and you also need to ignore the contradiction “called garbage” — “peak of glory”
4) In the topic about the AI of the game, we need to return to the argument of development by one person, which clearly did not contribute to its deepest development. Well, it’s worth noting that here the author is clearly being dishonest, because “to reduce the distance to the target as much as possible” is not an entirely accurate description. Yes, the AI was very primitive, but even then it varied a little, and now, after many improvements, it has improved in many ways. Skeletons will dodge the player’s blows, said ifrits will stand still, shooting from afar, etc.
5) Well, with the “trick” everything is generally simple: it is precisely that the player has complete freedom in the game. And this is not an exaggeration. With the ability to change any point in the game world, many console commands that are not hidden, but on the contrary: easily accessible to anyone, as well as modding, Minecraft has become a game where you can do whatever you want with this very game. And if the author himself is not interested in this concept, then this is his problem, and in no way a reason for the noble hatred of the game.
6) What a pity that the author did not continue the analogy with cutting with a jigsaw? Why does a person cut? — to create something. Why rearrange blocks in Minecraft? — for the same purpose! And if you don’t want to pull blocks, then there is just that “single player campaign”, which (surprise, surprise) develops with the discovery of “meaningless” achievements. Yes, there is no plot, and killing a dragon is not something incredible, but it all makes sense in the game, and the player receives a reward for everything. Mined a diamond? Get the achievement. Now you can craft the best gear in the game and continue your adventure, and so on.
7) We have already talked about prospects, and I can agree with part of what was written in paragraph 7. Yes, creating huge updates every day is not only impossible, but also not profitable, not only for developers and publishers, but also for the players themselves. New items will quickly become boring, interest in the game will fade and people will stop buying it. Therefore, all modern minecraft updates are aimed not only in breadth, but also in depth, in order to keep players occupied for longer. And if the game grows too much, it will become too cumbersome and inconvenient.

9) Pointing out the lack of realism in a game is a stupid thing to do. Realism is not part of the compulsory program, it is a tool. Exactly the same as anti-realism. Recreating reality in a game so that it doesn’t become boring is the most difficult task. In the games mentioned earlier — Dark Messiah, Kingdome Come and For Honor — there is not an ounce of realism outside of well-thought-out aspects, and this does not prevent them from being excellent games.
10) well, the last “reason”. The one for which I am most offended. The audience of fools is a merit not of Minecraft itself, but of its popularity. It’s just that a LOT of people play it, and even if every one of 1000 is a fool, then an incredible number of players are recruited. Many Minecraft players are incredibly developed, creative and interesting people. And raking everyone under the same brush
you belittle them incredibly. It’s enough to go to YouTube and click not on another let’s play by Vasya1843, but on something worthwhile to be convinced of this. Well, one person created a working computer in Minecraft! A full-fledged (in the general sense) computer in a game about rearranging blocks. And he’s not alone. And by putting all the people who play Minecraft in the minus of the game, you are showing great disrespect.
About halfway through writing, I realized that I had chosen an almost impossible task for myself (thanks to the author’s arguments, they were too wrong), and therefore I wrote a lot in a general and superficial way, there was too much I wanted to say initially. To hate a game of the “Sandbox” genre for the reasons that there is no reward system or leaderboards already shows the mindset of the blog author. And to criticize for the lack of a plot is already a diagnosis of a brain disease. The amount of absurd bullshit on this blog is so overwhelming that I doubt that the author of the blog has not yet been fired.
Hates the game for his own canned reasons, where this person has ONLY ONE MODEL of creating games and he sees nothing else beyond his horizon. One gets the feeling that what he wants from the game is some kind of hyper-realistic shooter game, where he, like a small child, will be led by the hand and shown content.
BUT THIS IS A COMPLETELY OPPOSITE GENRE OF GAMES! This is not a story-based shooter! And the game is of the “sandbox” genre, where the game gives you the OPPORTUNITY to create unlimited content yourself, which just develops creative thinking in a person, rather than stupidly mindlessly following the plot… The player has COMPLETE FREEDOM OF ACTION.
And in the blog, the author writes out criticism, presenting it as if the game should completely dumb down a person and do everything for him.

People also unite in a group of friends, make a city or a state and work on development.
